Meet Maddie (& a Footnote on SAAM)

Meet Maddie (full name Madeleine LeDog*). She's a bundle of love in a dashing fur coat and protector of the property. Her interests include sniffing things, shredding sundry items (included but not limited to rags, tissues, plastic wrappers, and important paper documents she may have found lying on the kitchen table), sniffing things, anything edible, sniffing things, licking toes, sniffin' thangs, and trying to break the world record for number of times dashed to the other end of the yard and back in 10 seconds. Oh, and sniffing things.

Anyways, yesterday Maddie's humans decided to take her for a walk, by which they meant let her take them for a walk (she pulls hard). Maddie went totally OMGOMGOMG apesh*t it was so exciting.

But HEY! AMERICANS! Before I let you go for the weekend: April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. And this is why you should be aware not only of the month but of sexual assault itself:
1 --> if you are a woman, because it affects you and all of your peers
2 --> if you are a man, because it may also affect you but if not certainly affects many of the incredible women that make your life and your world the way it is.

So just as a casual celebration, I'll be closing up each article this month with a little factoid/fun tidbit about sexual assault and related issues. Just a conversation starter, you know. (Please weigh in!) Luckily today's is more empowering than depressing: yesterday was International Topless Jihad Day (warning: nudity) and people take their topless jihad seriously (if you've got it, you might as well use it!). Sexual assault and oppression of women is a global problem, innocent-girls-who-turn-a-blind-eye-to-the-problems-facing-us-as-women-today, not just limited to India or South Africa or even Brazil or Saudi Arabia or Scotland - let's not forget that a woman is sexually assaulted every 2 minutes in the U.S. as well.

Now go out, dress as slutty or as modestly as you please, and know that you have every right to control your body, who touches it, and what you do with it, and while you're being all empowered think about Amina, who is taking death threats just to make that simple and seemingly obvious statement. Yay for topless jihadists! (And yay for burqas, too, as long as it's wearer's choice!) Our bodies, our choice, and don't let anyone tell you, or anyone you know, otherwise.

*possibly not her real surname. Do dogs have official surnames? We don't really know. Why is it called a SURname anyways? ...I digress.
